Who is your superman/woman?
Over the weekend, I had the chance to attend Mass in a place that I had never been. As I entered, it looked just like every other church, with one noticeable difference: there was a woman at the front and center who appeared important. I quickly recognized her purpose as soon as announcements began: she was a sign language interpreter for another woman in the front row. That woman began to sign back to the interpreter in a type of imitation and expression that I wasn’t expecting.
Throughout Mass, I constantly found my eyes drifting off to watch the sign language interpreter and the woman’s response. The consistent imitation got me thinking about my purpose and who I am imitating in my life. I realized that the sheer reason I was at this church in the first place was due to the fact that I was imitating my Mom, my hero. I had travelled to Des Moines to race in a half marathon not only because of my Mom’s consistent encouragement and support, but also due to her love and passion for running. However, my Mom isn’t my hero because she simply enjoys running. Instead, it’s the way in which she consistently works toward her goals, a small little bit each day. Furthermore, the way my Mom embraces each day as opportunity to give to others is inspiring. It’s easy to think about our heroes in the way that they have accomplished monumental successes, but those big wins wouldn’t have been possible without striving for excellence in the small and ordinary moments of everyday life.
In my opinion, our heroes are the people who we want to imitate (just like the woman and her sign language interpreter). While we may want to enjoy the same successes as our heroes, we can also imitate the small ways in which our heroes go about the tasks of everyday life. I think as kids, we are naturally drawn to superheroes on the screen because of what these characters can do, yet it is important to remember that superheroes are around us in everyday life.
